This marks the 50th consecutive week of documented noncompliance under Permit No. 1091787. Conditions remain unchanged: parked cars, moving vehicles, scooters, and unpermitted use during an 18-hour “temporary” weekend closure now concluding its fifth year. Over the past year, residents and small businesses have taken on the responsibility of documenting conditions on Hayes Street, a responsibility that should never have fallen on the community. Their consistent observations reflect a closure that has operated well beyond its intent, with limited oversight and no defensible basis for continuation. As this permit term ends, the record now stands: an entire year of weekly violations, combined with five years of a temporary closure, show that this arrangement no longer aligns with its stated purpose. We urge SFMTA to bring this chapter to a close and reopen Hayes Street to its intended, lawful use.
