Week 43 • Hayes Street Temporary Street Closure Permit No. 1091787 Noncompliance

October 8, 2025

Attention SFMTA:

Conditions for this past weekend:
Friday October 3, 2025
Saturday October 4, 2025

This marks the 43rd consecutive week of documented noncompliance under Permit No. 1091787. As in prior weeks, the same violations persist:

• Vehicles driving through and parked inside the closure.

• The recurring “Signature” men’s clothing tent, which continues to operate without any visible permit. Our volunteers have asked this vendor to produce permits on multiple occasions, and their responses have been consistently evasive.

• On Saturday evening, a few children were observed doodling with chalk near the Octavia end of the block. While these images are not included here out of privacy considerations, the conditions have been documented. It bears repeating that Hayes Valley already has multiple playgrounds and several underutilized open spaces where such activities would be both safer and more appropriate. Notably, electric scooters and vehicles were moving through the closure at the same time—underscoring the ongoing safety contradictions of this unmanaged setup.

After 43 weeks of noncompliance, it is unclear how this closure remains under active consideration for continuance. We have yet to receive any explanation as to why restoration of Hayes Street is not being prioritized as the appropriate and necessary next step.
