Attention SFMTA:
See street conditions for this past weekend:
Friday August 1, 2025
Saturday August 2, 2025
This marks the 34th consecutive week of documented noncompliance under Permit No. 1091787. As with previous weeks, the street was barren and lackluster, with nothing justifying the continued disruption to the corridor. We want to direct your attention to the traffic cluster at Hayes & Octavia on Friday August 1 and to additional footage from Saturday August 2 showing a traffic standstill on Gough Street, with Uber/Lyft drivers backed up due to the closure. Also on Saturday a small music performance was staged in the closure zone — about half a dozen people playing on one side, and half a dozen sitting in chairs on the other (chairs which now appear to be deliberately spaced out to “fill” the closure). The optics and feedback we’re receiving from neighbors and retailers alike is clear: this is getting increasingly absurd, especially when Patricia’s Green and Parcel K sit vacant nearby.
Additionally, since SFMTA has taken no action to address the ongoing branding and signage falsely identifying this as the “Hayes Promenade”, we are formally notifying you: we intend to begin displaying signage and messaging on the block supporting the reopening of Hayes Street. We assume that, in the name of fair use and equitable public messaging, this will be permitted.
