The Hayes Street “temporary” closure has dragged on for years; a failed experiment that has hurt small businesses, divided neighbors, and eroded public trust in SFMTA. With the city facing a budget shortfall, it’s unacceptable that public resources continue to defend a noncompliant, politically driven project that strays far from the agency’s core mission.
Join residents and merchants across the city in urging the SFMTA Board to end this failed closure, restore Hayes Street, and refocus the agency on its true purpose: transportation, accountability, and public trust. Our coalition successfully advocated for reopening the other two blocks of Hayes that were once part of this same permit. Please help us finish the job and reopen our business corridor now that COVID is behind us.
The current permit holder continues to push for permanent closure under the claim that the community “needs” event space despite multiple open spaces just steps away that can already host such events through existing city permits.
San Franciscans deserve accountability. The longer this continues, the more it erodes confidence in how the city manages its streets and neighborhoods.
