Head West Impact Survey

Why We’re Asking

We’ve been speaking up about the impacts of the Head West Marketplace in Hayes Valley. Those who have raised concerns have often been shamed or dismissed by the Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association (HVNA) and Hayes Valley Merchant Council (HVMC), both of which continue to promote and endorse the event.

HVSafe advocates for the other independent voice in Hayes Valley, not just the one promoted by HVNA/MC. When the 500 block of Hayes was harmed by the street closure, we successfully pushed for its reopening. We later pressured City Hall to reopen the 300 block as well. When the commemoration project for the freeway removal was being turned into a grandiose capital improvement plan, we spoke up to keep it grounded in reality.

Right now, with Head West, SFMTA has been forthright that they cannot adjudicate business losses or actual neighborhood harm. Until that changes, we need to stay the course — and your feedback is essential.

Your anonymous input will:

  1. Corroborate community and business concerns as we prepare our position for 2026.
  2. Help determine whether this event should be reduced, restructured, or canceled.
  3. Strengthen our collective voice — if you agree with our concerns, we encourage you to join our advocacy efforts.
