Week 82 • Hayes Street Temporary Street Closure Permit No. 1316522 Noncompliance

July 6, 2026
Attention SFMTA:
Friday July 3, 2026
Saturday July 4, 2026

Status of this past weekend’s closure again reflected longstanding compliance concerns documented throughout this permit term.

On Saturday, July 4, Hayes Street was observed closed approximately five hours before the permit’s authorized Saturday start time of 3:00 pm. The condition was documented and reported. Closing a public street before the authorized permit hours—particularly on a national holiday—raises yet another question about how this program continues to operate without meaningful oversight or accountability.

Eighty-two weeks into this closure, the documented record continues to expand while taxpayers continue to subsidize a program with a documented pattern of noncompliance. At a time when SFMTA faces significant operational, financial, and public confidence challenges, accountability to permit conditions and responsible stewardship of public resources should become more—not less—important.

The public record is now well established. Why this permit remains in effect is now the central question. It is time for SFMTA to revoke Shared Spaces Permit No. 1316522 and restore the 400 block of Hayes Street to normal public use.
